Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) 260hrs of class- 6 Months
Total hours of basic training: 740hrs - 14 Months
*This is the minimum requirement to be eligable for employment

Why doesn't the Fire Department  have more Volunteers?
The State of Florida passed a rule that all Volunteer Firefighters take a 240 hour class to teach them Firefighter I basic skills this was once a 40 hour class. Most volunteers found it a task unreachable due to the long hours and physical demand both on family and work. In Polk County alone the number of Volunteer Firefighters have gone from 300+ to less then 85 active members.
